Why God Loves Fred Phelp and Hates Fags

On a cold December day downtown Nashville, Tennessee, like a latter-day Moses, Rev. Fred Phelps holds in each hand bright yellow-and-orange posters: 'Baptist 666 Fags' and 'Matt in Hell.' Today he's celebrating the death of the 21- year-old Wyoming man beaten to death for being gay. According to Phelps, the boy has 'sold his soul to the fag agenda.'

Fred Waldron Phelps, Sr. is the pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), in Topeka, Kansas. He identifies with the prophets and martyrs of the Bible and claims that God punishes homosexuals as well as people such as Ronald Reagan whom he considers a 'fag-enabler'.

Homosexuality has doomed the world to eternal dam-nation.

He preaches with slogans and banners such as 'Thank God for 9/11', 'God hates fags,' 'AIDS cures fags,' and 'Fags die, God laughs (or mocks)' At sixty-nine, he runs 6.2 miles a day. The strongest thing he drinks is a 'vitamin C cocktail' consisting of vitamin C, Diet Pepsi and water.

Oh, and I forgot, he's a disbarred lawyer.

Where did all this hate come from? Well...Freud would call it mis-directed cock envy. But the truth is simpler, and in many ways scarier. In 2005, Phelps' granddaughter Jael was running against Tiffany Muller, the first openly gay member of the Topeka City Council. When she lost to a lezzie, Jael and family openly began protesting homosexuality.

Phelps and his followers get their rocks off by picketing military funerals, gay pride gatherings, high-profile political gatherings, and even Christian gatherings. He argues that it is his sacred duty to warn others of God's anger. When criticized, Phelps hides behind the 'Free Speech' First Amendment.

Oh, WBC likes to keep count of wounded and dead soldiers, too. Dam-nation.

Who else does Phelp hate? Well... just about everyone and everything. Phelp hates Sweden for promoting homosexuality; hates Canada as 'homo-fascist' for having Hate Speech laws and legalizing same-sex marriage; hates Ireland for being saturated with fag, dykes and Leprechauns, at every level of society and government, and he hates Mexico for, well, being Mexico.

You would think that with this much on his hands, Phelps would be too knackered to have a hobby. Think again. When not riling about homosexuality, he mans his church at Westboro and its 71 confirmed members, 60 of whom are related to him through blood, marriage or both -- all without Viagra!

Vitamin C cocktail. Dam-nation.

America really pissed him off on June 26, 2003, when the Supreme Court ruled to respect sodomy. Phelp shat a brick then stated that 'more than ever, his gospel message is this world's last hope'.

As another cunt punt, on May 24, 2006, the United States House and Senate passed the Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act, signed by Bush. The act bans protests within 300 feet of national cemeteries. As of April 2006, at least 17 states have banned protests near funeral sites immediately before and after ceremonies.

But not to worry, because this nutter is in the States, right? Nothing to worry about here in the UK, right? Well... Dam-nation. Here in the UK we have our own home grown lunatic.

Meet Stephen Green, a British fundamentalist Christian campaigner and the leader of the Christian Voice organization. In the early 1990s, Green was a prominent campaigner against homosexuality through the Conservative Family Campaign, and wrote the book 'The Sexual Dead-End'.

On September 2, 2006, Green was arrested in Cardiff at the city's Mardi Gras for distributing disruptive pamphlets but the case against Stephen Green was dropped by Cardiff Magistrates Court for lack of evidence. Though at this stage Green comes off as a mini-me Phelps, he's definitely one to watch for.

When Phelp was asked how he felt being the target of so much hatred in the US, he replied: 'I love them to death. If they weren't doing that, how else would I get my reward in heaven?'

Next, Phelp plans to picket the funeral of Army Staff Sgt. Keith M. Maupin. Thank God for another Dead Soldier! will scream his banner. Adding, 'That is some goodness right there!'
